Who You Are

Sila's Moses Lake Engineering team is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Sr. Staff Mechanical Designer & Fabrication Specialist to contribute to our innovative projects. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in CAD design across multiple engineering disciplines, coupled with hands-on fabrication skills and a deep commitment to safety and functional design. This role requires a detail-oriented individual with excellent computer, communication, organizational, and problem-solving abilities. The successful candidate will be capable of working independently on unique designs, collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams, and potentially managing projects and resources.

Responsibilities and Duties  

  • Create detailed 2D and 3D designs and models utilizing a variety of CAD software, including the Autodesk Suite, Inventor, Plant 3D, SolidWorks.
  • Develop and maintain Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Troubleshoot existing equipment and processes, and develop innovative solutions to address unique needs.
  • Apply knowledge of safety principles and regulations (including PSM) in the design and development process.
  • Participate in or lead safety initiatives, such as Action Committees, Behavior Based Safety programs, HAZOP analyses, and incident investigations.
  • Assist with mechanical repairs and customizations on equipment.
  • Develop project plans, budgets, and schedules for assigned tasks or projects.
  • Effectively communicate technical information through written reports, presentations, and visual aids.
  • Organize and facilitate meetings.
  • Potentially manage project resources and provide guidance to other team members.
  • Conduct field inspections and translate observations into practical designs.
  • Contribute to Research and Development (R&D) projects.
  • Develop and maintain CAD standards and work practices.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements 

  • Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Drafting and Design or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience (ideally 10+ years) in advanced mechanical design and drafting, preferably within an industrial or manufacturing environment (chemical industry experience is highly valued).
  • Proficiency in a range of CAD software, including Autodesk suite, Inventor, Plant 3D, SolidWorks. Familiarity with Studio 3ds Max and Navisworks is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical principles, safety regulations, and functional design.
  • Hands-on experience with manual fabrication techniques and machine shop equipment.
  • Ability to operate mobile equipment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and presentation abilities.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical issues and develop creative solutions.
  • Experience with project management, budgeting, and resource scheduling is desirable.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Pass a respirator fit test and be able to wear respiratory protection on a daily basis
  • Wear personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, a lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and steel toe safety shoes
  • Move items up to 50 lbs with the assistance of lift equipment and carts
  • Move long distances (such as from building to building) and be stationary for extended periods of time
  • Reach low shelves or items on the floor
  • Enter spaces narrower than 3 feet
  • Climb stairs or over containment walls
  • Precise and repetitive handling of a range of material quantities
  • Operate a computer and other office equipment, such as a laptop, copier/printer, etc in a fixed location

 

The starting base pay for this role is between $163,000 and $206,000 at the time of posting. The actual base pay depends on many factors, such as education, experience, and skills. Base pay is only one part of Sila’s competitive Total Rewards package that can include benefits, perks, equity, and bonuses.  The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
